Afterburner
In the wake of last month's visit to the Whitstable Oyster Festival, we headed down to West Dean College for their annual Chili Fiesta on Sunday.
Last year we got there just past midday after a gruelling 3 and some hours worth of riving, most of it spent in gridlock for the last 7 miles before the turnoff to the fiesta. This year we thought we'd be clever and leave home at stupid o' clock, which we did.
It was a clear run all the way there...the result being we were there over an hour before the gates opened. And you know, theres not a single goddamn coffee shop or tea room out htere that opens before 11? It's insane. Anyway, we managed to entertain ourselves for the hour (don't ask) and hit the stalls.
Within 5 minutes my mouth was on fire, courtesy of
chilli pepper Pete - awesome sauces, friendly & well versed in chilli lore. His was the only stall I actually bought stuff from. Once the flames died down we ambled along, sampling goods from every stall. Some good, some mediocre, all good, especially the fried prawn sampler!
The sun came out, the wasps descended, food was eaten. It was better than last year, and not just because we got there before the Great Horde. I very much reccomend it to anyone with a love of fiery food! there was something for everyone. I have some new seeds for next year's planting which I'm pretty excited about as well as a basket full of Pete's sauces and powders, which i'm planning on using for tonight's supper :)
